In accordance with the provisions of the NRW Police Organization Act, the Kreispolizeibehörden have advisory boards.

The police advisory board is the link between the population, local government and the police. It not only supports a trusting relationship, but also brings requests and suggestions from the public to the police.

The advisory board meets four times a year and is not open to the public. It has eleven members, who are drawn from the area of responsibility of the Polizeipräsidium Essen (municipalities of Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr).

The local police advisory board is chaired by Councillor (City of Essen), Peter Tuppeck (CDU)
